Ebook Development.
Contract ebook Development
As an ebook developer I convert supplied text or InDesign files into well-formed ebooks for publication, both fixed and reflowable, with a focus on accessibility.
Digital Publishing Specialist
Orca Book Publishers
As an ebook developer I have built or remediated over 300 ebooks to
Benetech GCA standards
and developed a
python-based workflow
to help take ebooks from InDesign files though to accessible epubs.
Currently I produce 80–90 fiction and non-fiction reflowable and fixed layout epubs a year for Orca.
Standard Ebooks
I sat as an editor at the Standard Ebooks project for several years. What started as a sideline project producing open source, public domain ebooks evolved into participating as a core contributor as the project gains steam. I produced 4–6 ebooks/year as well as acted a reviewer for others’ projects. My work on this project is on hiatus but I hope to get back to it as time allows.
The process
By taking existing open-source transcriptions from sources like Gutenberg.org etc. that are in the public domain, Standard Ebooks’ aim is to produce quality editions through the process of applying thoughtful typography, high-quality markup, editorial standards and a specialized style guide. The addition of current ebook semantic and web standards in the construction process then creates a more accessible and future proof document.
Using a series of custom tools the text is corrected and standardized, redesigned, proofread again and finally issued on the Standard Ebook website in multiple formats as Public Domain texts. The system allows regular maintenance and updates after publication by both the original producer and the community at large.
